Depression, fear and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at any point in our lives. Whilst the symptoms can vary from person to person, one thing is clear, they can be one of the most debilitating conditions of modern times. As many as one in six people will suffer with some form of depression or anxiety at some point during their lives.
Depression and anxiety can have a huge impact whilst interfering with relationships, sleep patterns, eating habits, work, school and routine activities. Effective therapy can significantly reduce or eliminate symptoms associated with depression and anxiety in a relatively short time, allowing a person to resume regular activities whilst regaining a sense of control. Therapy will help you to recover motivation and perspective whilst teaching you new skills to be able to challenge depressive or anxious thoughts and behaviours at the onset, encouraging you to be confident about leading a depression and anxious free life. Depression and anxiety are very treatable conditions.
Grief can be an overwhelming experience and will effect people in many different ways. A wide range of emotional and physical symptoms include profound sadness, feelings of emptiness, despair, yearning, instability, deep loneliness, fatigue, nausea, lowered immunity, weight loss or weight gain, aches and pains, and insomnia. Whilst we are all affected by loss at some time or another, the experience is very unique to each one of us. Whilst many people are able to come through bereavement without the need for counselling, many will suffer serious consequences to both their physical and mental health. Therapy will give you the opportunity to work through your grief and the impact the loss has had on your life. Therapy will help you to embrace change and assist you to take positive steps to enhance your general wellbeing.
Trauma is the emotional shock experienced after an extremely stressfull or 'traumatic' event. Many individuals will experience various emotional and physical symptoms associated with such painful and traumatic circumstances long after the trauma actually happened. Strong feelings of intense fear, hopelessness, self blame and horror are just a few emotions that can linger post traumatic events and can be triggered at any time causing great distress. Therapy can help you to process these painful experiences and the intrusive thoughts and memories attached to such events. Therapy will help you overcome these symptoms whilst guiding you through the process of healing.
Whilst there have been some beneficial changes for our children and young people in todays society, some are faced with numerous pressures whilst they navigate their way from childhood to adulthood. The education system is so focused on targets our children and adolescents can feel overwhelmed with constant pressure to succeed. The digital age can also present problems where peer influence is a factor and acceptance is often craved by our children. Constantly compering themselves to others on social media can have an extremely negative impact on how they see themselves. In addition, websites which promotes self-harm and suicide are a worrying influence on our children who are vulnerable to distress.
Therapy gives the child the opportunity to talk about how they feel without the fear of being judged whilst helping them to understand what may be causing them to feel the way they do. The therapy will be structured accordingly to the child's age and development. Various methods of visual interventions can be used including drawing, painting, creative art and computerised interactive tools to help children talk about and understand their emotions.
Therapy can help children cope with everyday worries, such as exam and school pressures, relationship issues with friends and family members, self-harm, grief, low moods and anxiety. Therapy can help children and young people recognise that their negative behaviours are understandable in response to difficult experiences whilst providing a platform from which they can build a more accurate picture of their inner strengths and their ability to change.
